What does black joy look like to you?

Black Joy to me exists in the nuance of our experience as a people. Small moments that might otherwise go unnoticed by someone that doesn’t share our complexion. The smile or head nod you get from another Black person in an unfamiliar space. The instinctual dap you give when meeting someone new. The feeling you get when the “cha-cha slide” comes on at a party! These exchanges are just a few that come to mind - that at least to me, feel unique to my experience as a Black person, and I love every second of these moments.

The Hills, 1998 - Cleveland, OH. My grandparents always loved to laugh and make jokes, and I have so many vidid memories of them greeting me with a huge hug whenever I’d come to visit them. Seeing this image of their smiles reminds of where I’m from, what home looks like, and the love that got me here today.
