Erin Williams

Bio

I'm Erin Williams, a Black artist and creative currently based in St. Louis. I specialize in drawing, abstract acrylics, and printmaking. My work has been featured in various newsletters and sites, I have led workshops and painting classes, and in Fall 2021 I began earning an MFA in Illustration and Visual Culture from Washington University in St. Louis. From 2019-2021, I hosted and produced the podcast “In Which I Talk To Artists,” where I interviewed artists about their work and inspiration. I am also a member of Solas Studios in New York City.

What does black joy look like to you?

Happiness! Freedom! Summertime! Warmth and acceptance. Doing as I damn well please. Watching other Black people shine and achieve their dreams. Anything posted on instagram by my dear friend, Nicole Crowder. When I shave my head and like what I see. Stevie Wonder, now and forever.

Picks & Combs I-III (Series) 2022, Monoprint on Watercolor Paper. Beyond the utility of combs, I love the style and definition of how they represent Black culture, and most importantly, Black hair. Some may have tongue-in-cheek moments of pain when using certain combs, but the resulting style brings about joy and beauty from the inside. There’s no better confidence booster than to have your scalp styled to your likeness, whether that’s with as little or as much hair as possible. This series pays homage to that process.
